Detective Stories

Pullman, Phillip
Part of the Red Hot Reads series of various genres, the stories are by several authors and were chosen for the book by Philip Pullman. My favorites were The Cross Of Lorraine, by Isaac Asimov, and The Newdick Helicopter, by Leslie Charteris.

I Was A Rat!

Pullman, Phillip
A bedraggled young boy shows up at Bob and Joan's house with few memories but of formerly being a rat. A charming story which I didn't see ending as it did, till near the end.

Spring-Heeled Jack

Pullman, Phillip
Three children run away from an oppressive orphanage and are aided by a mythical English character named for the springs in his boots that allow him to jump high buildings. An enjoyable story, partially in cartoon form.

The Amber Spyglass

The third and final book in the series, Lyra and Will save the day. Christians may not like this series too much.

The Tin Princess

Pullman, Phillip
I enjoyed this very much. Adelaide marries a prince and gets involved in the political machinations of the times.

Words I Had To Look Up:

morganatic (pg.40) -- Of or denoting a marriage in which neither the spouse of lower rank nor any children have any claim to the possessions or title of the spouse of higher rank.
birdlime (pg. 75) -- A sticky substance spread on twigs to trap small birds.
charlotte a la parisienne (pg. 160) -- Seems to be a dessert of complicated heritage.

Quote:

..."Look, can't we just shoot the guard and run for it?"
"If there any shooting, I'll do it. But not guards. He's just doing what's he's told. Mind you, he's not doing what I tell him. Perhaps I will shoot him."... -- pg. 213

V.

Pynchon, Thomas
Interesting, some extremely boring parts, must be the parts I didn't understand. Interesting electronics references.

QUOTE:

Her novels--three to date--ran a thousand pages each and like sanitary napkins had gathered in an immense and faithful sisterhood of consumers.

Vineland

Pynchon, Thomas
Somewhat more readable than V., so far.

QUOTE:

In the interests of cost containment, Takeshi subscribed to the services of Cheapsat, an economy communicatins satellite that was not, like more expensive units, geosynchronous, or parked in orbit always above the same spot on the Earth -- no, Cheapsat instead drifted continually backward through the heavens, always going over the horizon in the middle of people's calls, as it even now was doing.

Balsamic Dreams

Queenan, Joe
Rant on the Baby Boomer generation. Enjoyed listening to the author more than reading the book.

Motorcycle Mutt

Radlauer, E. and R. S.
Great little story about John and Kookie the Motorcycle Mutt. I've seen them in magazine articles and in On Any Sunday, now in a book telling their story. I read a scanned copy online.

Waiting For Godalming

Rankin, Robert
Detective solves God's murder. Too clever for me, but I enjoyed the "plinth" part. LATER: Read again. Reminds me of Terry Pratchett, this time around.

Figgs & Phantoms

Raskin, Ellen
Well, that was interesting... Found this one during inventory, hasn\'t been checked out in nearly thirty years. I actually remember the last person who borrowed it! Glad I read it, very nice pictures, but did not think it was fabulous. That is, the second half was too strange for me.
