First Degree

Rosenfelt, David
Andy Carpenter, #2.
Lawyer defends his girlfriend who is charging with murdering a cop.
I was expecting more dog in the story, but it was OK.

Quote:

"Sorry to interrupt, Andy," she says. "At first I wasn't sure it was you. I thought it might be a rock star."
I put on my most wistful look. "For a moment there, I was."

Quote:

...a twenty-seven-year-old Puerto Rican immigrant living in Passaic. -- It sounds odd to refer to a U.S. citizen as an immigrant, even though New Jersey IS another world.

Quote:

We bring a loaf of bread to fed them -- Don't feed the ducks bread!

Quote:

"Don't I know you from somewhere?"
I shrug. "Maybe. I went to NYU. What fraternity were you in?"

How I Live Now

Rosoff, Meg

After The Dancing Days

Rostkowski, Magaret I.
Annie goes to the Catholic hospital where her father is a doctor after World War I and meets wounded veterans who challenge her outlook on life. VERY excellent, very weepy second half. When she goes for her first motorcycle ride with her uncle, that brought back memories. It IS like flying!

Quote::

"Oh, hello, kitty." -- pg. 150

Quote::

"Well, won't that be interesting?" -- pg. 206

The Name Of The Wind

Rothfuss, Patrick
The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1. Pretty darn good! Kvothe tells the story of his origins.

Quote:

"You said yourself that there was nothing you could have done."
"I could have," Kvothe said seriously, "and I didn't. I made my choice and I regret it to this day. Regret stays with you forever."

Quote:

"Yes, of course." I kept my eyes down as I tugged on my other sock and boot, too embarrassed to look her in the eye. "It's every girl's dream to be rescued from someone's pet pig."

The Narrow Road Between Desires

Rothfuss, Patrick
The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2.6, this is labeled. A Fae lad (150 years old, I think) lives in a human villages, trading with the children for secrets and favors, and apparently being tutored by a guy at the Inn. I enjoyed it very much.

Quote:

"Did you steal my soap?" he asked incredulously.

The Slow Regard Of Silent Things

Rothfuss, Patrick
The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2.5.
A charming tale about Auri, who lives in the Underthing. I am so glad I got to read this story, the author states that he wasn't going to publish it as he thought no one would read it.
I love the eight pages of soap making!!

Quote:

Better still, the slow regard of silent things had wafted off the moisture in the air.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone

Rowling, J.K.
Boy goes to wizard school. Didn't appeal to me. Too cutesy. I recommend So You Want To Be A Wizard by Diane Duane, A Wizard Of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin, The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper and even The Winter Of Magic's Return by Pamela Service. Read it again in 2012, it seems to have improved a bit. Now I'm reading book two! Interesting that Nicholas Flamel is in there!

The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association

Rozakis, Caitlin
A couple move to a new place so their kindergarten werewolf daughter can fit in. Well, stuff happens.

Quote:

But Vivian liked adding up all the numbers. Not having numbers add up made her itch.

Quote:

"The whole 'sacred Indian burial ground' thing is a trope invented by lazy racist horror writers, it's kind of offensive, no offense." -- Are you saying Stephen King is racist?

Quote:

"So they all follow you because..."
"Because I'm their grandmother." She sniffed.
"And because you're terrifying."
"Well, naturally."

Quote:

"You're right," Orphne sighed. "Cookies won't solve this. We need pizza."

The Sheriff Of Yrnameer

Rubens, Michael
After escaping the tentacled bounty hunter Kenneth, Cole ends up being the reluctant sheriff of a village beset, or soon-to-be, by outlaws. Bad Men. Some pretty funny stuff.

Words I Had To Look Up:

amuse bouche (pg. 263) -- A small complimentary appetizer offered at some restaurants.

Quote:

It had been that way since the WikiWars a century ago, when Wikipedia became self-aware and began vengefully reediting its contributors with remote-controlled heavy weaponry. (pg. 18)
