Quote:

"Any truly cultivated palate realizes how completely cocoa outclasses coffee as a beverage of choice. Anyone but a barbarian knows that."

Quote:

"Good." Honor nodded in satisfaction. There'd never been much doubt, but it was nice to be certain they'd be killing the right people.

In Enemy Hands

Weber, David
Well, Honor gets captured by the Peeps, gets sent to their secret prison planet. Yikes!

Quote:

"Waffles?" White Haven repeated the unfamiliar word as if sampling it.
"Think of them as, oh, crunchy, quilted pancakes," she said.

Quote:

"I'm afraid styles are just a bit different back home," she went on in an artfully worried voice, "but I did manage to find a few formal gowns before I left. Do you think I should wear the backless one with the V-neckline, or the one slit to the hip?" --She went with the backless one.

Quote:

War Of Honor

Weber, David
Book #10 in the series. The Manties skirmish with the Andies, and the Peeps kick butt on the Manties. Except where Honor is in charge. I'm gonna stop with this series for now, I'm tired of how the author digresses so much.

Daddy-Long-Legs

Webster, Jean
I judged the book by the movie, and with unreasonable teen-age male prejudices, at that. And, as usual, I was wrong. This charming story, told through letters, is about an orphan named Jerusha (Judy) who is given the opportunity to go to college. The book was published in 1912, I am assuming it takes place around then. Judy is a feisty, curious girl, so there are references to women's suffrage and socialism. You can see below I found a lot of things to look up! Although you can see the denouement, as Judy would put it, coming a mile away, it is still very sweet.

Words I Had To Look Up:

her peroration in midair (pg. 10) -- A flowery and highly rhetorical oration.
inimical ... to change (pg. 68) -- Being adverse often by reason of hostility or malevolence
drank every drop of Jamaica ginger they had in stock (pg. 107) -- An alcoholic extract of ginger used as a flavoring.
I'm not anybody's nursemaid or typewriter, or bookkeeper... (pg. 52) -- An archaic term for one who uses a typewriter; a typist.
probity (pg. 142) -- Complete and confirmed integrity; uprightness.
reflected glory (pg. 72) -- Not one's own; received from another.

Quotes:

So in case a war breaks out between the United States and Japan, or the president is assassinated... -- (pg. 111) War with Japan? Wow, that's scary, this was published in 1912. President McKinley had been assasinated in 1901, though the next was President Kennedy in 1963.

>President Cuyler made speech this evening about the modern generation being flippant and superfical. He says we are losing the old ideals of earnest endeavor and true scholarship; and particularly is this falling off noticeable in our disrespectful attitude toward organized authority. -- (pg. 136) Remember, this book was published in 1912.

The only thing that keeps me from starting a collection [of toads] is the fact that no rule exists against it. -- (pg. 46)

Guy Time

Weeks, Sarah
Guy's parents are getting divorced, and he is having girl trouble.

Artemis

Weir, Andy
Artemis is a city on the moon, and consists of several bubbles. The main character is a woman I thought was a seventeen-year-old girl for most of the book. She nearly kills everyone, but (SPOILER) ends up saving everyone from her almost killing them. Not a complicated story, and maybe the writing could be a little more better, but it did the job and was fun to read. I may even give The Martian a try!

Project Hail Mary

Weir, Andy
Earth's sun is threatened by some space-creature that eats it, or something. Grace (last name) goes on a one-way trip to another star to see why it isn't threatened. Very good story, lots of science, but very readable. Great ending.

The Martian

Weir, Andy
An enjoyable story of a stranded astronaut. Rather techy, but I mostly just skip over that stuff!
